Vredeman Object
2009
Relief print on Fabriano Rosaspina paper

Click for descriptionTaking it's title from Vredeman de Vries, as with much of the artists work, this relief explores the strange engravings made by Vredeman in the mid 16th century. Made as part of the Flatworks exhibition, this print references the large scale installation 'South Square Frieze' in that it is part of the artist's ongoing interest in attempting to reconstruct the virtual spaces found in these engravings. The 'object' of the title, refers both to the sense that one element has been extracted from a particular Vredeman's engraving and reconstructed in a virtual three dimensional drawing programme as an 'object', and also to the latin origin 'objectum' meaning 'thing presented to the mind'.

Through a subtle intervention with the surface of the paper, the eye is able to use the resulting light and shadow to 'read' the object, the illusion of three dimensionality finally reconstructed by the mind.
