195 Miles
Project Space Leeds in association with the Whitchapel Gallery, London

There are 195 miles between London and Leeds. This project created a bridge between two cities, two spaces and eight artists. For 195 Miles, PSL and the Whitechapel Gallery invited four artists from Leeds to engage in a dialogue with four artists from East London culminating in four collaborative works of art conceived and presented for PSL. Beth Chaplin from the Whitechapel Gallery joined the three PSL Directors in curating the project.

Untitled Drawing (after Vredeman)
Fablon, 370cm x 1310cm
Created and installed for the launch event, this wall collage explores the relationship between the viewer, the walls as 'picture plane' and a 'virtual sculpture' based on the drawings of the 16th century architect Hans Vredeman de Vries. The object, created by computer, is 'installed' within the gallery space using Google Earth, then two different views of the object are collaged onto the wall. These views represent a 'correct' perspective view when standing directly in the centre of each wall, viewing from 2 meters. The shadows are correct for the location at 12 noon, the opening time of the gallery.

59 virtual objects all called 'cake' by the people who made them
Video projections
The result of the collaborative process, a video installation created with Lizzie Hughes.
